Google’s latest development; the +1 button

WRM-Media

As members of the Direct Marketing Association, WRM-Media are keen to play an active role in the industry. On 26/05/11, we attended their ‘Marketing with a Digital Heartbeat’ event and discovered some interesting news from the digital industry, which we thought we’d share.

Google are in the process of developing their own ‘Like’ button – not that they would ever want you to call it that; they are describing it as a button which, according to them is shorthand for “this is pretty cool”, or “you should check this out”.

Before long, when you carry out a Google search, you will find the +1 button next to every search result that comes up. This could have a powerful impact on how your search results appear; with searches tailored towards what you have previously +1’d as well as your friends, if they choose to share them.

It will also feature as a bookmark as all of your +1s will be saved in your Google profile; you do need a Google profile to be able to take advantage of the +1 button.

From a website perspective, this could have an impact on your web traffic and search engine optimisation (SEO) as the more +1s you have, you higher you could find yourself in the rankings for search terms that the people who +1’d you previously searched. This may lead to the possibility of using the +1 format as a review service, by requesting that clients +1 you if they have found your services useful.

It is anticipated that you will be able to feature the +1 button on your website alongside other social media buttons, in which case this may be something to consider incorporating in to your email marketing campaigns in the future.
